    Masonry vs Prefabricated Chimney Systems

Masonry chimneys use a concrete or stone cap mounted at the top of the brick structure, with a smaller rain cap covering the flue opening. These caps protect the flue from rain and debris while allowing proper ventilation. Prefabricated chimney systems use a full metal chase cover that spans the entire top of the chase enclosure. Chase covers are typically made from galvanized or stainless steel and are critical for preventing water from pooling on top of the chase, which can lead to interior rust damage and system failure. Understanding which system your home has determines the correct cap or cover type, sizing, and installation method.

    What Louisville homeowners say

The cap installation went smoothly and while already on the roof they checked the crown for any cracking. Found a small crack that hadn't been there last year. Sealed it while up there. That kind of attention while already on site saves a separate visit.
